I’ve got it figured out, now. The life of a parent is a life-long obsession with your kids. Before I became a parent , I used to wake up thinking: Can I come up with a way to lose my retainer, Today? Is anyone in class going to actually say something nice to me, Today? What can I read at recess, and every chance that I get, at school, to make the time go by, less torturously.
Today, when I wake up, I start thinking about what to put in my son’s lunch, then it’s how can I get him to co-operate with my attempts to get him dressed and into the car, and when he gets to school, is he going to be warm enough? Too warm?
I’m probably boring some of you, with the mundanities, and others of you are probably on the same wavelength with me, and adding your own list of mundanities, because the list doesn’t end. We even dream about our kids, at night, along with a host of other dream items.
So rearing our children is truely an obsession, but a very necessary one.
This is made abundantly apparent by the growing crime rate…………..everywhere, and the growing number of talk shows geared toward making the community aware of the (alleged?) reason for the growing crime rate: The fact that we don’t properly discipline our children. Here’s where I get a bit on my Soap Box: Please don’t misinterpret my use of the word discipline. I’m refering to the Websters Dictionary definition. Keep in mind that a disciple is a student, and that our kids learn more by what we do and don’t do than by what we say. The best thing that you can show your kids, is respect for every creature on Earth, starting with the people and pets that you love and live with, because crime is simply an extreme expression of disrespect or contempt.
Okay, enough with the preaching, at least about how to raise your kids. Now for the really good stuff. While your busy with preparations for getting your kids off to school, or just as good, into bed, for the night, you may want to busy part of your mind with possibilities for having some fun, alone, or with your significant other, or with your whole family, or just a few family members. The fun stuff is just as important as the serious discipline. Maybe even more so.
If we raise our kids by making happy memories with them, then they are going to want to do more of the same with their families, and besides, we’re going to find that life is much more enjoyable, when we do the fun stuff with our families, too.
It’s important to get a balance of “me time” and “us time”. Everyone needs some “me time” for recharging. If you don’t recharge your own batteries, often, then you will end up drained with nothing left to give. Some days are like that for me, and it’s on those days, that my son is at his most demanding, and most obnoxious, because he just needs the security of knowing that I love him, and talk and play are synonomous with love, to him.
I don’t have any great advice for the times that you’re not at your peak, and your kid(s) are demanding that you play or read with them. I happen to be very lucky, in that I can turn to my husband, at times like that, but not every parent is lucky enough to have a built in support system, and I’m sure that a lot of my readers would love some advice, on this one. Please feel free to send in your ideas/comments/questions/what-nots.
Thanks for reading. Hope you enjoyed it, and will check out my other blog. You can get to it, through my main site: WWW.Perfectdaymassage.com. It’s called HappyHealth, and you’ll find it in the navigation bar. You’ll also find a link to my “weblog” there. Please feel free to check it out, for a discount on your next massage, courtesy of Sue, CMT of Suzanne’s Hands of Petaluma.
